Membership file contains two applications for membership. The first, in 1897, was probably withdrawn for some reason, since there is no mention in the board minutes of action taken on it, nor does his name appear in the member ledger books where dues were recorded. The second application, in 1908, resulted in membership. Marshall appears to have been an active member of the Illinois Chapter of the AIA, as shown in two mentions of him in the chapter's report that was published in the July 1910 issue of the American Institute of Architects Quarterly Bulletin. (The extant early records of the Illinois Chapter are held by the Chicago Historical Society.)
