Richard C. Biberstein (1859-1931), a native of Texas, graduated from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. He arrived in Charlotte in 1887 after finding employment in New Jersey and Indiana. For several years he worked as a draftsman and designer for various Charlotte industries before founding his own architectural firm in 1905. Many of the firm's projects were textile mills and mill communities in Virginia and the Carolinas.

This collections contains building plans, specifications, blueprints, contracts, and correspondence from the firm of Biberstein and Bowles, Inc.-later Biberstein, Bowles, Meacham & Reed- (Charlotte, North Carolina). The materials pertain to the construction of the Botany-Zoology building (Gardner Hall) and the Print Shop on the campus of North Carolina State College. Documents include building schedules, working drawings, HVAC and plumbing diagrams, design notes, addenda, and superseded plans.
