Very few of the AIA's records from the 1870s have survived. The only information in the AIA Archives about J. C. Babcock is that he is listed as a member of the New York Chapter in the chapter's report in the 1877, 1878, and 1879 Annual Proceedings. His name is on a list of delinquent members in the Board minutes from May 19, 1879.
A cumulative member list published in the 1888 Proceedings shows J. C. Babcock as having joined in 1877 and lapsed in October 1877. This is probably a typographical error for October 1879, when the minutes show the delinquent members were dropped from the rolls (although their names were not listed in the October minutes).
The 1888 list also gives his location as St. John, N.B. There is no other evidence for this address; the book Architects in Practice, New York City, 1840-1900 has directory listings for him for 1875-77 that match the addresses shown in the New York Chapter reports, then a gap until he's listed again at a different New York address from 1882-1891.
