Membership applications from the first half of 1901, including Mr. Thayer's, are not in the AIA Archives. His membership file documents a dispute with the AIA over dues. The AIA's Judiciary Committee found him in violation of the AIA's rules about entering unauthorized competitions in 1913, and he wrote a letter of resignation. When asked to pay his back dues, he said that he had already written a letter of resignation in 1909. A lawsuit for payment was decided by an Alderman in Thayer's favor; the AIA's lawyers felt there was a good case for appeal, but it was decided to be not worth the expense.
