North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the School of Design at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering.
