Frank Kartowicz was born in Chicago and lived in Riverside, Illinois for most of his life. He was the chief designer at the American Terra Cotta Company for a number of years. In 1934, Kartowicz was granted a patent for pre-fabricated units of housing.

Collection consists of blueprints of working drawings for pre-built small house units of various designs. The text of the original patent for pre-fabricated building units is included in the collection as well as sets of plans illustrating the construction of such structures.
