Archie Ashelman was born in Ada, Minnesota, in 1891. He was employed as a draftsman for Hancock Brothers of Fargo from 1905 to 1910 and became a partner of William Gage around 1915. Their partnership was terminated in 1917 when Ashelman volunteered for the U.S. Army and was subsequently killed in an automobile accident just prior to his entry into the officers' training program.
