Hua Li was an architect, trained as an engineer in China. He came to the United States after World War II and graduated from MIT in 1949. He worked for several firms in the Boston area, most significantly, Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott. His specialization was the design of schools and hospitals. He was also an avid photographer of architecture and landscape.

The architectural papers and photographic documentation from the estate of architect Hua Li include architectural drawings, blueprints of design projects, and circa 14 linear ft. of photographic documentation of buildings and sites around the world. Also included are personal journals (primarily documenting his travel), sketchbooks and books.
